How to perform umrah in simple way: Step by Step
Before You Leave Home
First things first! Here’s what you need to sort out:
- Documents (Keep them safe in a travel pouch):
- Valid passport
- Umrah visa
- Vaccination records (optional)
- Travel insurance
- Emergency contacts list (Agency owner/Family Etc)
- Pack These Essentials:
- Ihram clothes (2 sets (4 Piece – Must)
- Comfy slip-on shoes (you’ll be walking a lot!)
- Small backpack for your Tawaf
- Unscented soap and toiletries
- Water bottle (stay hydrated!)

Starting Your Umrah Journey
Step 1: Entering Ihram
Before you reach Miqat (for most people, this will be at Jeddah airport or from your Home), you’ll need to:
- Take a nice, refreshing shower (ghusl)
- Put on your Ihram clothes
- Pray 2 rakats (if it’s not a prohibited prayer time)
- Make your intention (niyyah) for Umrah
Now comes the important part – the Talbiyah. This is your spiritual “Here I am!” to Allah:
لَبَّيْكَ اَللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً ❁
Labbayka Llāhumma ʿUmrah.
O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah.
Allāhumma innī urīdu l-ʿUmrah.
O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah.
Allāhumma innī urīdu l-ʿUmrata fa yassirhā lī wa taqabbalhā minnī.
O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.
Pro tip: Keep repeating this Talbiyah throughout your journey. It’s like your spiritual anthem!
Step 2: Entering Masjid Al-Haram
When you first see the Kaaba, recite this beautiful dua:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ زِدْ هَذَا الْبَيْتَ تَشْرِيفًا وَتَعْظِيمًا وَتَكْرِيمًا وَمَهَابَةً
Transliteration: “Allahumma zid haadhal baita tashreefan wa ta’dheeman wa takreeman wa mahaabah”
Meaning: “O Allah, increase this House in honor, magnitude, reverence, and awe”
Step 3: Performing Tawaf
Think of Tawaf as your personal conversation with Allah while walking around His house. Here’s how to do it:
- Start at the Black Stone corner
- Make seven rounds (keep the Kaaba on your left)
- During each round, when you reach the Yemeni Corner, say:
Arabic: رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Transliteration: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil akhirati hasanatan waqina adhaban-nar”
Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire”
Quick tip: Don’t worry about memorizing specific duas for each round. Just speak to Allah from your heart in whatever language you’re comfortable with!
Step 4: Praying at Maqam Ibrahim
After Tawaf, pray 2 rakats near Maqam Ibrahim if possible. If it’s too crowded (which it usually is!), pray anywhere in the mosque. Before praying, recite:
Transliteration: “Wattakhidhu min maqami Ibrahima musalla”
Meaning: “And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer”
Step 5: Sa’i Between Safa and Marwa
At Safa, start with this dua:
Arabic: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
Transliteration: “Innas-Safa wal Marwata min sha’a’irillah”
Meaning: “Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah”
During Sa’i:
- Walk normally most of the time
- Light jog between the green lights (for men)
- Make dua freely in your own words
- Complete seven rounds (Safa to Marwa is one round)
Step 6: Cutting Hair
For men: Get your head shaved or trimmed For women: Cut about an inch of hair
And that’s it – you’ve completed your Umrah.
