How to Perform Umrah

Guide : How to Perform Umrah in Easy Way with All Dua.

Assalamu Alaikum,

In the heart of our beautiful faith, there lies a journey that holds immense spiritual significance – Umrah. Let us embark on this sacred voyage together, guided by the light of our faith and the love for our Creator.

Introduction About Umrah

As Muslims, we’re lucky to have a chance to go on a special journey called Umrah. It’s not something we have to do like Hajj, but it brings many blessings. Let’s discover why Umrah is so important and beautiful in our lives.

Why Perform Umrah?

    1. Purifying the Soul: Umrah is like a spiritual shower, washing away our sins and making our hearts clean. It helps us ask for forgiveness and get closer to Allah’s kindness.
    2. Following the Prophet’s Example: Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did Umrah, showing us how to do it right. When we do Umrah like him, we get blessings and feel more connected to Allah.
    3. Special Guests of Allah: During Umrah, we’re like VIP guests of Allah. We feel peaceful and special when we enter Makkah, the holy city.
    4. Chance to Ask for Forgiveness: Umrah gives us a chance to say sorry to Allah for the wrong things we’ve done. It helps us get rid of our sins and get closer to Allah.
    5. Getting Lots of Blessings: Allah gives us lots of good things when we do Umrah. It makes our hearts full of faith and takes away our problems.
    6. Like Doing Something Really Good: Doing Umrah is like doing something really good, like Jihad. Allah gives us big rewards for it and helps us get to Paradise.
    7. Making Our Faith Stronger: Umrah makes our faith stronger and helps us feel closer to Allah. It makes our hearts strong when bad things happen.

When Can You Perform Umrah?

  • Umrah can be undertaken at any time of the year except during the sacred Hajj season.
  • The blessed month of Ramadan holds special significance for Umrah due to its spiritual blessings.

How Many Times Can You Perform Umrah?

  • Unlike Hajj, which is obligatory once in a lifetime, Umrah is a voluntary act of worship.
  • We have the privilege to perform Umrah as often as we desire, renewing our spiritual connection with our Lord.

Let’s Discuss into the beautiful journey of Umrah, a spiritual pilgrimage filled with rituals that bring us closer to Allah.

Step One : Ihram

  1. Ihram is a special state that Muslims enter before doing Hajj or Umrah. It’s about having a focused mind and being ready physically.
  2. When you’re flying to Makkah, your Ihram starts on the plane before you get to Makkah. This usually happens about an hour and a half before you arrive. They’ll let you know with an announcement.
  3. These starting points for Ihram are called Meeqats.

Ihram

To Enter into Ihram:

  1. Before you travel, it’s good to clean yourself by removing hair, clipping nails, trimming mustache, and taking a shower.
  2. Put on your special clothes for the pilgrimage, called Ihram. It’s best to do this after you’ve prayed one of the five daily prayers.
  3. Make your intention to perform Hajj Tamattu’ and ’Umrah.
  4. Say “Allahumma labbayka ’Umrah” (which means “O Allah, here I am for Umrah”).
  5. Recite the Talbiyah, a special prayer for pilgrimage.
  6. If you forget to enter into Ihram at the designated point called Meeqat, you have to either leave Makkah and come back in, or you can offer a sheep as a penalty.

When both men and women are getting ready for Hajj, they need to follow these rules while wearing Ihram:

  1. Don’t argue or fight with others.
  2. Don’t say bad words or talk about bad things.
  3. Don’t use any perfumes or scented products like soap or lotion.
  4. Don’t cut your hair or nails, except for broken nails.
  5. Don’t do anything sexual.
  6. Don’t hunt animals or help others hunt.
  7. Don’t get married, propose, or help others get married.

To put it simply, after reaching the Meeqat and making the intention for Umrah, you enter a state called Ihram. During Ihram, certain things that are normally okay for you to do become not allowed. It’s important to keep this in mind as you continue with the next steps of Umrah.

Step Two – Tawaf

Tawaf is the act of walking around the Ka’bah seven times during Hajj and Umrah.

Before starting Tawaf:

  1. You must be in a state of cleanliness called wudu. (Women who are menstruating cannot do Tawaf).
  2. Men should wear their Ihrams in a way that their right shoulder is visible. This is called Idtiba’a. After completing Tawaf seven times, men should cover both shoulders again.

How to perform Tawaf?

  1. Start at the Black Stone and say a special prayer there. You can kiss the Black Stone, touch it and then kiss your hand, or just point to it without kissing your hand.
  2. Move from the Black Stone to the Yamaani corner without touching any other part of the Ka’bah. You can make any prayer you want at this corner.
  3. When you reach the Yamaani corner, you can touch it if you’re close enough, but don’t kiss it or your hand.
  4. Keep circling the Ka’bah back to the Black Stone while saying a special prayer for each circle.
  5. After seven circles, you’ll end back at the Black Stone. This completes one Tawaf. Now start another Tawaf and repeat the same steps.
  6. You have to do seven Tawafs in total to finish.

Some important things to remember:

  • Don’t enter the Hateem area during Tawaf. If you do, that Tawaf doesn’t count, and you’ll need to do it again.
  • For the first three Tawafs, men should walk slowly and jog a bit. This is called Ramal.
  • Women should walk normally for all seven Tawafs. Men should walk normally for the last four Tawafs.

After doing Tawaf seven times, you will pray two rak’at, putting the Maqam Ibrahim between you and the Ka’bah. You will then drink Zamzam water. Here is an ayah about Maqam Ibrahim to recite after finishing Tawaf:

Step Three – After Tawaf

How to Perform Umrah

After circling the Ka’bah: This circling is called Tawaf Al-Ifadah. To finish it, follow these steps:

  1. What to do at Maqam Ibrahim?
    • After circling, go to Maqam Ibrahim while reciting a verse from the Quran.
    • Stand with Maqam Ibrahim between you and the Ka’bah. Don’t try to stand directly in front, it’s too crowded. Anywhere in the mosque is fine as long as Maqam Ibrahim is in front of you.
    • Pray two units of prayer (rakats). It’s good to recite Surah Kafiroon in the first rakat and Surah Ikhlas in the second, after reciting Surah Fatihah.
  2. What to do after praying at Maqam Ibrahim?
    • Go to any Zamzam water point.
    • Drink Zamzam water while standing. It’s also good to pour some over your head.
    • While drinking, recite a special prayer.
    • Now, leave the mosque for Sa’ee, and recite the leaving prayer.

Though it might seem like a lot, these steps are quite simple once you’ve memorized them. To sum up: you entered the state of Ihram before, and now you’ve circled the Ka’bah seven times, prayed two rakats, and drank Zamzam water.

Step Four – Sa’ee: How to do Sa’ee?

  1. It’s good to have wudu, but not a must. Women on their period should do Sa’ee.
  2. While heading to Sa’ee, you can recite a special verse about Safa and Marwah.
  3. Start Sa’ee at Safa.
  4. You need to walk between Safa and Marwah seven times. Going from Safa to Marwah counts as one round, and returning from Marwah to Safa counts as another.
  5. Men should run a bit between two points, marked by green lights.
  6. At the top of each hill, recite a special prayer three times. You can also make your own prayers.
  7. After seven rounds, Sa’ee is done, and you’ll finish at Marwah.

This completes the Umrah. It’s time to end your Ihram.

Step Five -Ending Ihram

Ending Ihram To end Ihram, men trim or shave their head hair and change into regular clothes. Women trim their hair by a fingertip. After this, Ihram is over, and its rules no longer apply.

If you were doing ’Umrah, you have finished it now.
